Okay, so lately I have had a fashion epiphany and when you read it you will probably think 'well der' but I have stopped trying so hard when I get dressed. Naturally I am an over thinker and when I get dressed it inevitable drips into my sartorial decisions. My thought thread usually goes something like this; Where am I going? Who will be there? What will the weather be like... all day? Will I have to do anything during the day that may mean if I wear a dress or a skirt I will flash my underwear to the unexpecting world? and finally, rather shamefully, Have I uploaded a picture of me wearing it on social media already? All of the above make me a little sad because they take the fun out of getting dressed. So for the past few weeks I have been living by the 'stop trying so hard rule' and following a few simple steps. Surprisingly I am ready quicker and in my personal opinion my sartorial choices haven't suffered. In fact its made me a little more creative with my wardrobe. So here are a few simple tips. Oh, and if you guys have any that you stick to, sharing is caring...
Tips and Hints
If it don't work take it off
Sometimes I will get transfixed on wearing a particular item of clothing in my wardrobe to the point I will spend a great deal off time trying to make it work with a number of items when in fact I should take it off and move on.
Comfort
Comforts a funny word it can mean different things to different people but for me when I talk about being comfortable it's not always about wearing my favorite jogging bottoms it's about not having to worry about what you are wearing. It's that confidence that people often refer to when you wear something you don't have to re-arrange or worry about the fit, you feel... comfortable. So, now I stick to the rule if I don't feel comfortable in it take it off and stop trying to make it work. Who has time to constantly re-arrange something?
Start with the shoes
I must say this isn't a rule I always stick to but it has definitely helped me on those mornings I am short on time. Sometimes I will have thought of the perfect outfit, but guess what? The shoes that I thought would complete this look, look crap and now I am deflated and frazzled. So start with, 'I want to wear these shoes'. Go on try it you will be surprised how quickly it narrows down your options and if it doesn't, congratulations you have achieved what I have been trying to gain for years - A workable wardrobe teach me teach me.
Step away from your phone
Yes Pinterest and Instagram can be your friend but for me I find you end up looking like a clone of everyone else and it takes the fun out of getting dressed and having your own personal style. Even if you don't mean to copy someone you might inadvertently magpie someone. So go on, try it.
Do think about where your going?
Yeap this does matter. I know some people say you shouldn't, but lets be realistic. Sometimes for some life events there are certain ways you might want to present yourself. I would love to say that I don't dress for an occasion but I do, because lets face it, if I turned up dressed in the above outfit looking like a bowling alley attendant to your wedding you might be pretty P'od... unless it was bowling themed!
And if all else fails
Black jeans, White tee (Zara are my favs), converse and Leather or faux leather biker jacket and your always good to go in my opinion.
